Nobel Cloth and Nobel Napkin - Klässbols Linen Weaving

NOBEL – A BEAUTY, YEAR AFTER YEAR

Since 1991, the Nobel Party has been set annually with table linen and napkins made by Klässbols Linneväveri. The Nobel tablecloth and napkins are woven by Klässbols Linneväveri using traditional techniques, with a modern design. They are designed by Ingrid Dessau, who chose to weave the tablecloth in the dräll technique with coarse, silver-gray linen yarn of excellent quality that is in perfect balance with the warm whiteness of theline. The woven check pattern becomes visible because the light is reflected differently from the warp and weft surfaces. The napkins are also woven in damask, with thinner semi-bleached linen yarn, which nicely highlights the relief of the Nobel Medal.

ABOUT THE NOBEL DINNER SERVICE

In 1991, the result of a unique collaboration between some of Sweden's most skilled designers and quality-conscious manufacturers was launched. The idea behind the project was art historian Åke Livstedt and architect Magnus Silfverhielm. On behalf of the Nobel Foundation, a proposal for renewal was drawn up, regarding both the ceremonial setting and the banquet itself, for the celebration of the Nobel Prize's 90th anniversary in 1991. The decision was made to create completely new parts for the set table and Orrefors, Rörstrand, Gense and Klässbols Linneväveri were commissioned within their respective fields and Gunnar Cyrén, Karin Björquist and Ingrid Dessau were given responsibility for the design.
Ingrid Dessau, an outstanding designer who had her artistic breakthrough in 1953 during a joint exhibition with Signe Persson Melin at Galerie Moderne in Stockholm, was responsible for the textile design. After this, she was appointed first designer at Kasthall and during her time there has signed several carpets in their collection.
The Nobel series received the Excellent Swedish Design award in 1992 and today there are a number of different products in the Nobel range.

Over a thousand guests are invited and will enjoy a dinner of the finest quality at beautifully laid tables during the evening. Klässbols Linneväveri is contributing 500 meters of tablecloths and 1350 generous napkins measuring a full 70×70 cm. All of course in the finest linen .

Klässbol's mission

After Klässbols Linneväveri received its assignment, a major project began and two looms were built for the purpose. All weaving was done on mechanical looms, one with jacquard and one in shaft, all in satin weave. The cloth loom was the widest in the company's history with a weaving width of 210 cm to cover the honorary table. No cloth was under 10 meters long and a total of 500 meters of cloth were used during the Nobel banquet. The napkins are generous and have the Nobel emblem woven into one corner. When setting the table, the napkin is placed on the plate and, through the special Nobel fold, the bread can be placed in it to keep warm until dinner. It was a time-consuming job to weave the 1350 napkins. A work that lasted for a year. A unique part of the project was that the tablecloths were to be woven with natural, unbleached, untreated linen. The reasons for this were partly from an environmental perspective, but also so that the unbleached, gray cloth would function as a stage for glass, porcelain, cutlery and flower arrangements.

The Nobel cloth and napkins are woven by Klässbols Linneväveri using traditional techniques with a modern design. The woven check pattern becomes visible because the light is reflected differently from the warp and weft surfaces. The white napkins, 70×70 cm, are woven in damask with a thinner linen yarn that nicely highlights the Nobel emblem in one of the corners of the napkin. The Nobel range has been supplemented with a napkin, 50×50 cm, in satin and in the colors sand and white, all in pure linen.

On December 10th every year, the world's most talked-about party is set. An honorable assignment that Klässbols Linneväveri places great value on. Once again, 1350 guests will enjoy a unique event and get to experience parts of our Swedish cultural heritage in the form of textiles, glass and porcelain. We deliver tablecloths and napkins personally and are involved in setting the table.

DYLTA - the template for the Nobel cloth.

Dylta pattern was found by Röhsska Museum's director Helena Dahlbäck-Luttermans at the Baroness Lea Åkerhielm's Dylta Mill in Närke. The quality of the original is woven in coarse home-spun unbleached pure wool. The new production has taken care of all the original conditions. The cloth should be used frequently, it then gets a more beautiful appearance with each wash.
